Advice n°2: Easily create your own Costume

You dont’ want to buy a fancy dress in a shop or online ? You’re manual, handyman and you can create most of your suits by yourself ? Then you can create your costume by yourself, it will only require a bit of good will !

First of all, you will probably need to buy or retrieve some old clothes, uniforms, materials and items and customize them. Here are a few advices and tips to help you to create your own costume by yourself :

 

Create the main outfit of your fancy dress

The color of the clothes

If some of your clothes are not the right color and if the fabric is not too dark, you can use some dye (found in supermarkets). This way, the choice of color will be reduced but the fabric of your clothes will keep good quality.

For a more precise color you can use spray paint. With this option, the choice of colors will be more accurate but the fabric will lose its quality and will be more “rough”. Personally, I still prefer the spray paint because it’s faster and the visual quality is pretty good. Furthermore, the color will generally perfectly corresponds to what you expected. And so the fancy dress will look realistic !

 

The size and the cut of the clothes

Usually your clothes will not be the right size or will not have the right cut. Then you’ll probably need to adjust them. So get ready to cut and sew to make your fancy dress amazing ! If you do not really know how to do, it’s best to ask grandmother. Indeed, she will be happy to do this for you. If there is only a little editing to do and you are a great adventurer, you can attempt to improvise yourself a fashion designer. Don’t forget to use pinking shears for cutting fabric to prevent the fabric from fraying.

For details of your costume you can glue / sew pieces of fabric or add them directly to the fabric with a Posca (Colored felt).

 

Create the accessories of your fancy dress

Some materials and articles are very useful and sometimes essential in the making and design of your clothing accessories (Small ball mouse, Ping-Pong ball, felt, stick, crepe paper, cardboard, fabric …). Using and assembling these different materials and items will usually get you a good result. You can customize the color of your materials and items through dyeing, spray paint, markers, Posca paint … Generally the spray paint allows to color all kinds of materials and offer a wide choice of colors and a good quality.

Ps: You will probably have to wear your costume for the whole evening, so make sure your fancy dress does not bother you. You have to feel very comfortable with it so you will be at your best all the time of your party or event ! 😀
